Why Choose Grayslate for Individual Therapy?

Why Grayslate

Therapy built on trust, presence, and deep care

Starting therapy can feel scary. Especially if you’ve felt dismissed, unseen, or misunderstood before. That’s why at Grayslate, we believe that therapy is a relationship that is first and foremost built on trust, presence, and deep care.

Unfortunately, most clients that we see have had experiences of therapy where they felt dismissed, unseen or misunderstood. Maybe you’ve worked with a therapist that spent a lot of time talking about their own personal experiences rather than yours.

We’re not into ‘fixing’ you (because you’re not broken). We’re here to listen closely, reflect honestly, and help you reconnect with your own voice and inner strength.

Our practice is rooted in anti-oppression values, emotional attunement, and cultural humility. Our team brings specialized experience working with Queer, BIPOC, immigrant, and neurodivergent folks — and we’re always learning, unlearning, and showing up for you.

You’ll find us in East LA and online statewide.

What Individual Therapy Offers You

Individual therapy is a space that’s just for you: your thoughts, your feelings, your pace. It’s where you get to unpack what’s been weighing on you, explore the patterns holding you back, and build new ways of showing up for yourself and others.

Here’s what individual therapy can help with:

  • → Managing anxiety, panic, and stress
  • → Healing from past trauma or complex family dynamics
  • → Building self-esteem and trust in your own voice
  • → Understanding your emotional triggers
  • → Setting boundaries and feeling more empowered in relationships
  • → Processing grief, heartbreak, or big life changes
  • → Clarifying your identity, purpose, or career direction

Most of all, therapy gives you space to feel, to question, and to grow without being judged or rushed.

Our Approach

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

At Grayslate, we use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) as the foundation of our work with individuals. EFT is a powerful, research-backed approach that helps you explore your emotional experiences with curiosity, not shame.

Rooted in attachment theory, EFT views our emotions as essential guides, not problems to fix. Many of us learned to ignore or suppress our feelings in order to survive our childhoods. EFT helps us slow down, tune in, and understand what our emotions are trying to say.

In individual therapy, EFT helps you recognize the emotional patterns that keep you stuck so you can deepen self-awareness and self-compassion, build secure connections with yourself and others, and heal past emotional wounds.

EFT isn’t about pushing through pain — it’s about learning to sit with your emotions safely and gently creating space for new emotional experiences. It’s deep work, and it’s also profoundly affirming.

You don’t need to have all the words. We’ll help you find them, together.

The Process

Your Therapy Journey

When you’re starting individual therapy, chances are you don’t have everything figured out. In fact, most people begin with one simple need: to feel better. Here’s what the therapy process often looks like at Grayslate:

01

First Sessions: Building Connection

We begin by exploring your story: what’s bringing you in, what’s felt heavy, and what you hope might shift. No pressure — just a safe space to begin unpacking at your own pace.

02

Middle Phase: Emotional Clarity

As trust builds, we’ll explore deeper emotional patterns and you’ll learn skills to manage your emotions more effectively. Through EFT, you’ll start consciously choosing to react differently.

03

Later Phase: New Ways of Being

You’ll begin responding to yourself and others with more clarity, compassion, and courage. Eventually you’ll graduate therapy equipped with all the skills to continue your journey on your own.

Sessions are 50 minutes and usually weekly — in-person at our East LA office or online across California. We also offer 75 or 90-minute sessions.

Questions

Individual Therapy FAQs

How long will I need therapy?

It really depends. Some clients come for a few months to work through a specific challenge. Others stay for a year or more as they deepen their understanding and emotional growth. We’ll talk about your goals and pace together.

Do you work with neurodivergent and Queer clients?

Absolutely! Many of our clients identify as Queer, trans, non-binary, neurodivergent (including ADHD, autism spectrum), or BIPOC. Our therapists are trained in affirming, identity-conscious care.

What’s different about EFT?

Emotionally Focused Therapy helps you access and understand your emotional patterns so you can respond to life from a grounded, empowered place. It’s deeply effective for people who feel stuck in cycles of reactivity, shutdown, or overwhelm. Instead of worksheets, you’re working with your emotions and learning how to honor them in a healthy way.

Can I do therapy online?

Yes, we offer teletherapy across California via a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform. You can join from your home, car, or anywhere you feel safe.

What if I’m not sure therapy is right for me?

You don’t have to be sure. That’s what the free 20-minute consultation is for — to ask questions and get a feel for how we work.

What about fees, insurance & affordability?

Grayslate is a private-pay practice — we don’t accept or bill insurance directly for therapy services. If you carry a PPO insurance plan, you’re responsible for payment at the time of service. We’ll provide a monthly superbill that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
Our standard session rates range from $150–$320, depending on the clinician. We deeply believe that healing should be accessible. That’s why we reserve sliding-scale and pro bono spots for folks from marginalized communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and neurodiverse clients who are financially limited. If cost is a concern, reach out — we’ll always talk it through with care and transparency.

Is your office accessible?

Our East LA office is centrally located with accessible on-street parking. Evening and limited weekend appointments are available. Everything runs through our HIPAA-compliant client portal.
Please note, the office is not ADA accessible — it does not have an elevator and is on the second floor. However, if you have a disability we will accommodate your needs and meet you at an accessible office.

How do you protect my rights?

All our therapeutic work is protected under HIPAA — your sessions and records are handled with strict confidentiality. We also commit to providing a Good Faith Estimate, ensuring full transparency about fees and financial expectations. No surprise bills, ever.
